Ruth Sharlene Collins, daughter of the late Fitz G. and Esther F. (Archer) Collins, was born on October 25, 1955, at Cambridge City Hospital in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She was educated in the Cambridge School system with advanced college studies at Boston University School of Nursing and Mount Auburn Hospital School of Nursing. In 2017, Ruth graduated from Bay Path University with a BA in Psychology–Family Counseling. Her years of employment included Spectrum Health Systems, The Health Foundation of Central Massachusetts, and Hanover Insurance Group of Worcester, MA.
Ruth accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior in her early teens. She gave of her time in teaching Sunday School at Pentecostal Tabernacle in Cambridge, MA. She sang with various choir outreach ministries in Cambridge including The Pentecostal Tabernacle Choir, The New England Gospel Heralds, The Christian Youth Group (CYG) Choir, and others.
During her lifetime, Ruth was a member of Pentecostal Tabernacle, New Covenant Bible Fellowship of Marlboro and Worcester, MA, and Calvary Praise and Worship Center of Cambridge, MA.
Ruth was a very private person who believed in and practiced the power of prayer. She was also quietly generous, emulating the words of Matthew 6:1-2:
“Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you have no reward from your Father in Heaven. So, when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets. . .”
She willingly gave of her finances, of her time, and of herself, to the youngest of children and to adult individuals alike. She was “quietly faithful.”
On March 22, 2024, Ruth took the hand of the Savior she loved so much and entered into her Heavenly rest. Preceded in death by her sister Lynette and her brother Warren, Ruth has left to celebrate the memory of her life: her sisters, Uldine Collins, Marva Collins, Sylvia Haywood, and Joyce Julien; brothers-in-law Rev. K. Allan Haywood and Isidore Mervin Julien; Uncle Joshua Collins; Aunts Gloria Archer and Esther Collins; 9 nephews and 2 nieces; 17 great-nephews and 10 great-nieces; a special cousin-like-a-sister Jacqui Archer; her prayer partner and close friend Beatriz Rayo; and many cousins, other relatives, and friends.
“Don’t grieve for me, for now I’m free; I’m following the path God laid for me.
I took His hand when I heard His call. I turned my back and left it all.”
